Tips for using the GAM Film/FX

It is important to smooth focus the field of the ellipsoidal spotlight before inserting the GAM Film/FX into the gate. Hot spots will cause uneven wear on the Film/FX loops and shorten their useful life. Be sure that the field is as even as possible with no hot center. Always have the Film/FX loop in motion before the light comes on. Do not allow the Film/FX loop to be still in the gate as this will allow one section to heat up and shorten the life of the loop particularly if the excessive heat is focussed on the seam.

voltageControl using line voltage - Plug the rotator into a 120V outlet or dimmer and it will start to rotate. You can use a dimmer to vary the speed and you also can use the 6-step switch on the power transformer to vary the speed, especially useful when you have no dimmer. If you wish to change the direction of the rotation, use the polarity switch on the power transformer. 230V models do not have a polarity switch or 6-step speed control on power transformer.

Using a dimmer
- To easily start, stop, and adjust the rotation speed, plug your Film/FX™ into a dimmer. Most types (even inexpensive household dimmers) will work, although speed range and resolution may vary. Electronic dimmers slightly clip the top and/or bottom of the speed range, but offer good resolution. The best results are produced by autotransformers. Use the optional in-line speed control to adjust speed, if so equipped.

Tips for improving FX/Loop life

  1. The FX/loops are delicate. The designs are etched in a 2/1000” thick stainless steel. Please handle with extreme care. Do not wrinkle, crinkle, bend, or fold in any way that might create friction points when it is used in the Film/FX™.

  2. Be careful when placing it on the drive rollers, see that it is positioned squarely between the brass guide edges of the drive roller.

  3. There is a precision welded seam on the FX/loop. Check that seam when you get a new one. If the seam of a new loop is separated, the loop may be defective. This will be a wear point and will shorten the loop life.

  4. One way to increase loop life is to observe the overlap and place the loop in a way that ensures that the seam does not overlap in the direction of travel as viewed from the back of the unit. That may cause the raised edge to rub against the metal edge. (See drawing.)
